Stainless sight glass flanges

Stainless sight glass flanges are specialized flanges used in industrial processes where visual observation of the contents of a pipeline or vessel is necessary. They allow operators to monitor fluid levels, color, flow, and other properties without disrupting the system. Here’s an overview of stainless sight glass flanges:

  1. Design: Sight glass flanges typically consist of two glass discs held between two stainless steel flanges. The glass discs are sealed against the flanges using gaskets to prevent leaks. The space between the glass discs allows for the viewing of the fluid inside the pipeline or vessel. Sight glass flanges can have various designs, including weld neck, slip-on, or threaded, depending on the installation requirements.

  2. Materials: The flanges of sight glass assemblies are usually made of stainless steel to withstand the corrosive effects of the fluids being observed. Common stainless steel grades used for sight glass flanges include 304/304L, 316/316L, and 316Ti. The glass discs are typically made of borosilicate glass, which is resistant to thermal shock and chemical corrosion.

  3. Glass Discs: The glass discs in sight glass flanges are transparent and provide a clear view of the fluid inside the pipeline or vessel. Borosilicate glass is preferred due to its high chemical resistance and transparency. The glass discs are typically mounted between the flanges using gaskets made of materials compatible with the process fluid and operating conditions.

  4. Sealing: Proper sealing is crucial for the performance of sight glass flanges. Gaskets made of materials such as PTFE (Teflon), EPDM, or Viton are commonly used to seal the glass discs against the flanges and prevent leaks. The gaskets must be compatible with the process fluid and capable of withstanding the temperature and pressure conditions of the application.

  5. Connections: Sight glass flanges can be welded, bolted, or threaded onto the pipeline or vessel, depending on the installation requirements. Welded sight glass flanges are often used in high-pressure or high-temperature applications where a permanent connection is required. Bolted or threaded sight glass flanges offer easier installation and removal for maintenance or inspection purposes.

  6. Applications: Stainless sight glass flanges are used in various industries and processes where visual monitoring of fluid levels or properties is necessary. Common applications include pharmaceutical manufacturing, food and beverage processing, chemical processing, petrochemical refining, and water treatment. They are particularly useful in processes where the integrity of the fluid must be maintained, or where contamination or leakage must be prevented.

  7. Maintenance: Regular inspection and maintenance of sight glass flanges are essential to ensure their continued performance and reliability. The glass discs should be inspected for cracks, chips, or scratches that could impair visibility or compromise the integrity of the seal. Gaskets should be inspected and replaced as needed to prevent leaks.

When selecting stainless sight glass flanges for a specific application, factors such as the operating conditions, fluid properties, pressure and temperature requirements, and installation method should be carefully considered to ensure proper performance and compatibility with the process.
